Saukville to Algoma preview

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006 4:31 pm

Yesterday I gave a little teaser about my upcoming bike ride from Saukville to Algoma, WI. The ride is going to be close to 100 miles, though I think it will end up just short.

From Saukville, I will make my way northeast and meet up with the Ozaukee Interurban Trail north of Port Washington. This is a very nice paved trail that follows the railroad tracks north to Sheboygan County. From there I will make my way over to the shores of Lake Michigan and follow that as closely as possible all the way up to Algoma.

I will only have two major cities to weave through – Sheboygan and Manitowoc, and the scenery should be very neat right along the lake. Once I get to the lake it should be a pretty flat ride.

After my adventure last weekend I had thought about shortening the ride a bit, but the more I think about it the more I want to just tackle the whole thing. I’ll be sure to take my camera along and snap some pictures. Check back next Tuesday, hopefully I will have posted something by then.

Tomorrow I have the day off work so I can ride up to Sheboygan and back. That will be my last big ride before Saturday.

“Summer of Biking” continues

I biked close to 90 miles this weekend. Saturday my Dad and I biked north out of Green Bay to Mountain, WI. We left at about 6am and after a few brief stops for stretching and re-fueling, one slightly longer stop for lunch, and one incredibly long walk down a sandy road with man-eating mosquitoes (stupid map), 69 miles and 8 hours later we arrived in Mountain at my Grandparents around 2pm.

We were averaging pretty good time until we hit the sand road. I think we finished the first 45 miles in about 3 hours or so and at the time it appeared that we would be able to easily make it by noon.

The next day my grandparents drove us part of the way and we biked about 20 miles to Pulaski where we watched my brother Joel and his girlfriend jump out of a plane. We could have easily made it back to Green Bay, but we were running short of time so we hitched a ride back with my family.

Check back next week to hear how my 100 mile ride from Saukville to Algoma goes!

Oh, and if you ever find yourself in Suring, WI stop in at “The Snack Shack”, order a Turkey BLT, and say “Hi” to my cousin (once removed) Karen.
