Fun stuff for a Friday

Friday, September 29th, 2006 3:43 pm

I came across a post on 33′ Rockers by Karthik Kastury called the 10 Commandments of Web Design.  Very nice message, perhaps not inspired, but I agree with most of it.  Karthik is not the original author, he’s just an evangelist — spreading the word.  So I follow the link to the original site that the post came from.  Now that site looks like it follows most if not all of the commandments.  Very nice indeed – must be the Jewish synagogue.  But who is the author of the post?  Jim Edwards, author of the “MiniSiteCreator” — which he will tell you himself if you visit his website.  Aiiiyyee!!  That guy’s gotta be going to Hell.

Come on, don’t be offended.  It’s an analogy.  He’s the one that started with the biblical reference, I just carried it through to a logical conclusion.

Anyway, have a great weekend.

This one’s for my wife

This is another case of I should have written this last week, but the time came and went and now I have to do it before I forget about it completely.

My wife graduated from Blue Sky school of Massage Therapy last Thursday.  It was the culmination of a long year of dedicated studying and hard work on her part and support and sacrifice on the part of myself and our kids.  And it was worth it.  We are all so proud of her.

We knew you could do it, CONGRATULATIONS!!  We love you.

MJ-bashing

Thursday, September 28th, 2006 8:06 am

A friend and I were waxing nostalgic a couple weeks ago and somehow the topic of Michael Jackson came up.  He commented how easy it was for people to get on the MJ-bashing bandwagon because of recent events, and completely discount his entire career because of it.  The question “Do you like MJ” only has one answer these days, and it’s an indignant “are you kidding?”

But let’s face it, Michael Jackson was a pioneer, and I’m not embarassed to say that I have always liked his music and in fact I’m listening to his “Dangerous” album right now (which is what made me think to write this).

thrillerWhere were music videos and MTV before “Thriller”?  His style of dance still inspires excitement to watch it.  Despite the fact that he never rapped (can you imagine?) I believe his style of technical, tight-rhythm-oriented music in a way inspired the next generation of rapper.

Granted, the man is a freak, and has been most of his life.  And I don’t approve of the lyrical themes in a lot of his songs.  But you can’t take away from his dance and musical talent.

badI remember when I was in grade school in the early eighties.  My recollection is that Michael and Modonna where the top two singers.  You could like both of them because one was a boy and one was a girl.  Of course if you were a boy you were a little embarassed to say you liked Madonna, but Michael was cool.  Then I remember at some point Prince came into the popularity picture as a competitor and it became a question of “do you like Michael?” OR “do you like Prince?”  You couldn’t like both.  As a result, I never much listened to Prince in my younger years.  Kids are weird.  Growing up is weird.

Walkin with the kid

I don’t want this week to go past without saying something about my adventure this past Saturday.  I had the wonderful opportunity to spend the entire day with my 7-year-old son, just he and I (and about a billion strangers).  We dropped his mom and sister off at Grandma’s Saturday morning at about 9:00 and drove an hour down to Great America.  It was his first time there, and I’m sure he was bubbling with anticipation.  He’s seen the commercials on TV, so I know he was excited about it.

He was the most wonderful kid all day.  We had so much fun.  When we got home, he was so excited to tell his mom and sister about all the cool rides we went on.  He drew me a picture of his favorite ride, and at one point he said, “Dad, you’re my best friend”.  Wow.

4 weeks and still going strong

Take a look at my archive calendar. Here we are on day 28 since I started this blog, and I have already made 24 posts on 16 of those days. This is much better than I thought I would do. I realize that hardly anyone reads this, and I think that helps me to just put down whatever thoughts I have without worrying about what people will think. I’ve adopted the attitude that this blog is simply for the purpose of journaling my thoughts, for myself and anyone else that cares. Apparently nobody does, which is just fine with me :) .

I’m constantly trying to think of new subjects to write about, and recently testing the waters a little bit in a more technical arena. I think I’ll be doing more of that as we go along.

If anyone is reading this, please leave your comments – otherwise this will continue to be my own stupid ramblings. If I were to discover that I actually have an audience, I could pick topics as though I’m talking to someone instead of just thinking out loud.

But don’t worry, if you prefer to lurk anonymously, I’ll just keep thinking out loud.
