Saukville to Sheboygan – 60 miles

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 1:06 pm

I made it 60 miles this morning without any trouble. My neck still bothered me by mile 30 or so and nagged me all the way home. But this gave me a good boost of confidence for Saturday’s ride. Check back tomorrow, I’ll post my route for Saturday’s 100 mile ride from Saukville to Algoma.

Saukville to Algoma preview

Yesterday I gave a little teaser about my upcoming bike ride from Saukville to Algoma, WI. The ride is going to be close to 100 miles, though I think it will end up just short.

From Saukville, I will make my way northeast and meet up with the Ozaukee Interurban Trail north of Port Washington. This is a very nice paved trail that follows the railroad tracks north to Sheboygan County. From there I will make my way over to the shores of Lake Michigan and follow that as closely as possible all the way up to Algoma.

I will only have two major cities to weave through – Sheboygan and Manitowoc, and the scenery should be very neat right along the lake. Once I get to the lake it should be a pretty flat ride.

After my adventure last weekend I had thought about shortening the ride a bit, but the more I think about it the more I want to just tackle the whole thing. I’ll be sure to take my camera along and snap some pictures. Check back next Tuesday, hopefully I will have posted something by then.

Tomorrow I have the day off work so I can ride up to Sheboygan and back. That will be my last big ride before Saturday.

Three Times Daily?

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006 8:31 am

My friend Don (well, okay — my one and only reader) pointed out that “Three Times Daily” can refer to lots of things – eating, brushing teeth, praying, etc. To me it was more tongue-in-cheek humor given my past history of blogging (starts out strong for a couple days then drops off completely). I also think the phrase itself is phonetically and grammatically fun and interesting.

What do you do three times daily?

“Summer of Biking” continues

I biked close to 90 miles this weekend. Saturday my Dad and I biked north out of Green Bay to Mountain, WI. We left at about 6am and after a few brief stops for stretching and re-fueling, one slightly longer stop for lunch, and one incredibly long walk down a sandy road with man-eating mosquitoes (stupid map), 69 miles and 8 hours later we arrived in Mountain at my Grandparents around 2pm.

We were averaging pretty good time until we hit the sand road. I think we finished the first 45 miles in about 3 hours or so and at the time it appeared that we would be able to easily make it by noon.

The next day my grandparents drove us part of the way and we biked about 20 miles to Pulaski where we watched my brother Joel and his girlfriend jump out of a plane. We could have easily made it back to Green Bay, but we were running short of time so we hitched a ride back with my family.

Check back next week to hear how my 100 mile ride from Saukville to Algoma goes!

Oh, and if you ever find yourself in Suring, WI stop in at “The Snack Shack”, order a Turkey BLT, and say “Hi” to my cousin (once removed) Karen.

Bookmarks

How do you keep track of interesting sites on the Internet? Personally, I’m a memory guy. I have never kept a bookmark list in a browser. I remember keywords and find pages by Googling. My reasoning was always that if I relied on a bookmark list, at some point I would be without the list and then I’d be out of luck.

For awhile I kept a personal link list on my website, but it was not stupidly simple to maintain and update and eventually the links fell out of date. I had thought of trying one of those online bookmarking services, but my system of keyword memorization worked so well I didn’t think I needed it.

The Problem Memorization works fine as long as you remember that you want to remember something. If you forget about something that you wanted to remember, then it doesn’t matter if you remember keywords or not – it’s already forgotten.

I suppose an example is in order. One day at work I’m googling for “Advanced CSS techniques” and find a great article that I just don’t have time to read right now. So I file it away in memory. The problem is, I later forget that there was something that I had wanted to read. If I could remember that, then I could easily find the article again. Got it?

The Solution Recently I came across this online bookmarking service called Diigo, which stands for “Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff”. It actually let’s you highlight pages with your own comments, and even mark links as “Read” or “Unread” so you can quickly mark something of interest and go back and read it later.

So I’m no longer a memory guy, I’m a Diigo guy. And I feel so much more organized!

Do you use an online bookmarking service? If so, which one, and what do you like/dislike about it?

Wow, two days, two posts. What’s wrong with me!!?
